Vision, Mission, and Values
The Order envisions a compassionate world transformed by spiritual friendship, ethical service, and deep listening to the needs of our time. The Order seeks to bridge contemplative practice with engaged service.
Core values:
Wisdom – Applying the Dharma with clarity and discernment
Compassion – Meeting others with empathy and care
Integrity – Upholding ethical conduct
Service – Offering one’s practice and presence for the benefit of all beings
Becoming a Lay Minister (Nomination-Only)
Membership in the Order is by nomination only.
Individuals eligible for nomination:
Have sustained a regular meditation and Dharma practice over many years
Are under the guidance of qualified spiritual advisors
Have formally received at least the Five Precepts in the Buddhist tradition
Participate in teachings, retreats, and community practice
Before nomination, candidates are invited into a process of discernment with their spiritual mentors to ensure this path is aligned with their intention and life circumstances.
Lay ministry is not a lifetime obligation; individuals may step down as needed in response to life changes.
The Role and Practice of a Lay Minister
Lay ministers are:
Well-versed in the core teachings and practices of Buddhism
Authorized by their spiritual mentors to offer basic meditation instruction
Able to communicate foundational Buddhist teachings in a clear, accessible way
A formal Code of Conduct governs the ethical scope, responsibilities, and boundaries of lay ministers, including procedures for review and accountability, including disciplinary procedures if necessary.
Ordained Monastic Clergy
Monks and nuns who have received formal ordination from qualified Buddhist teachers or institutions, and who feel called to serve in broader social contexts, are welcome to seek nomination to join the Order of Kalyanamitra.
The Order offers additional training to support monastics in expanding their skillsets, allowing them to bring their deep spiritual insight into diverse community settings.
Training and Ongoing Support
All members of the Order receive:
Training in Buddhist pastoral care, chaplaincy, trauma awareness, and ethical service
Mentorship from senior teachers and peers
Opportunities for continued learning through retreats, workshops, and study groups
The Order supports members in cultivating inner resources while developing the skillsets needed for compassionate leadership in the world.
Commitments and Responsibilities
Members of the Order are expected to:
Maintain daily Dharma practice and ethical conduct
Participate in annual retreats and training
Serve in ways aligned with their capacities and the Order’s vision, mission, and values
Abide by the ethical guidelines and standards set forth by the community’s Spiritual Director
